» Itineraries » Mount Meru Climb via the Momella Route
Embark on an unforgettable 3-day Mount Meru adventure via the scenic Momella Route, a spectacular trekking experience through the heart of Arusha National Park. As Tanzania’s second-highest mountain at 4,566 meters, Mount Meru offers a rewarding climb with breathtaking scenery, abundant wildlife, and a true wilderness experience.
Unlike many mountain treks, your journey begins with a guided walk through open grasslands and montane forests, where it is common to encounter giraffes, buffaloes, zebras, warthogs, antelopes, and a variety of bird species. Accompanied by an armed park ranger, you’ll enjoy a unique combination of wildlife safari and mountain trekking found nowhere else in Tanzania.
As you ascend, the landscape transforms from lush rainforest and heathland to dramatic alpine moorlands and volcanic terrain. Along the way, you’ll be rewarded with magnificent views of the Meru Crater, Ash Cone, and, on clear days, the snow-capped summit of Mount Kilimanjaro rising on the distant horizon.
With fewer crowds than Mount Kilimanjaro, the Momella Route provides a peaceful and immersive trekking experience while still offering a rewarding physical challenge. It is an excellent choice for adventurous travelers seeking a high-altitude climb, those preparing for a Kilimanjaro expedition, or anyone looking to experience one of Tanzania’s most beautiful mountains.
Combining breathtaking landscapes, remarkable wildlife encounters, and the thrill of reaching the summit, the Mount Meru Climb via the Momella Route promises an unforgettable adventure and memories that will last a lifetime.
After an early breakfast, depart for Momella Gate in Arusha National Park, where your Mount Meru adventure begins. Upon arrival, complete the park registration process and meet your experienced mountain guide, porters, and armed park ranger, who will accompany you throughout the lower slopes of the mountain where wildlife is commonly encountered.
Your trek starts with a gentle ascent through open grasslands, acacia woodlands, and lush montane forest. Unlike most mountain climbs, Mount Meru offers the unique opportunity to combine trekking with a walking safari. Along the trail, you may encounter giraffes, buffaloes, zebras, warthogs, antelopes, colobus monkeys, and a remarkable variety of birdlife in their natural habitat.
As you gain elevation, the scenery becomes increasingly spectacular, with beautiful viewpoints overlooking the plains of Arusha National Park and, on clear days, distant views of Mount Kilimanjaro.
After several hours of trekking, arrive at Miriakamba Hut (approximately 2,514 meters), nestled in a peaceful forest clearing. Take time to relax, enjoy a freshly prepared dinner, and settle in for your first overnight stay on Mount Meru while surrounded by the sounds of the mountain wilderness.
Trekking Distance: Approximately 10 km
Elevation: 1,500 m to 2,514 m
Hiking Time: 4–6 hours
Habitat: Grassland, Montane Forest & Heathland
After breakfast, continue your ascent from Miriakamba Hut (approximately 2,514 meters) toward Saddle Hut (approximately 3,570 meters). As you climb higher, the lush montane forest gradually gives way to heathland and alpine moorland, revealing dramatic volcanic landscapes and increasingly spectacular mountain views.
The trail becomes steeper as you gain altitude, offering breathtaking panoramas of the Meru Crater, Ash Cone, and, on clear days, the majestic Mount Kilimanjaro rising in the distance. Along the way, your guide will ensure a comfortable pace, allowing plenty of time to enjoy the scenery and acclimatize to the increasing elevation.
Upon arrival at Saddle Hut, enjoy a well-deserved lunch and take time to rest before preparing for the next stage of your adventure.
For those feeling energetic, an optional acclimatization hike to Little Meru (approximately 3,820 meters) is highly recommended. This short trek provides outstanding panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys while following the important mountaineering principle of “climb high, sleep low,” helping your body adjust to the altitude before summit day.
Return to Saddle Hut in the late afternoon for a hearty dinner and a restful overnight stay as you prepare for your early morning summit attempt.
Trekking Distance: Approximately 8 km
Elevation: 2,514 m to 3,570 m
Optional Acclimatization Hike: Little Meru (3,820 m)

Your summit day begins shortly after midnight, departing from Saddle Hut under a sky filled with stars. Accompanied by your experienced mountain guide, you’ll make a steady ascent toward Socialist Peak (4,566 meters), the highest point on Mount Meru.
The trail passes Rhino Point (approximately 3,800 meters) and Cobra Point (approximately 4,350 meters) before reaching the narrow crater ridge leading to the summit. As dawn breaks, you’ll be rewarded with one of East Africa’s most spectacular sunrises, illuminating the dramatic crater below and offering breathtaking views of Mount Kilimanjaro, the Great Rift Valley, and the surrounding plains of Arusha National Park.
Upon reaching Socialist Peak, take time to celebrate your incredible achievement, capture unforgettable photographs, and enjoy the magnificent panoramic scenery from Tanzania’s second-highest mountain.
After spending time at the summit, begin your descent back to Saddle Hut, where you’ll enjoy a short rest and refreshments before continuing down through the heathland and montane forest to Momella Gate.
